First Pier for Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge was Prefabricated by CCCC-FHEC

The formwork for the first pier for Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, which was prefabricated by No.5 Eng. Co., Ltd. of CCCC-FHEC, was removed successfully on 5 March 2013, unveiling officially the pier after more than ten days of expectation.

Prefabrication of the first pier, Pier No.31, for Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge commenced on 31 Jan., 2013 and concreting was completed on 21 Feb., 2013. It is one of the 72 piers for Contract Package CB03 for Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Contract Package CB03 was contracted to and is being executed by the joint venture of CCCC-First Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd and CCCC Second Highway Engineering Co., Ltd and the works of this package start in the east from the connection bridge at West Manmade Island and end in the west connecting with Contract Package CB04 in deep water zone, totaling 8670 m in length.

The 72 prefabricated concrete piers will include 68 abutments for non-navigational spans and 4 abutments for navigational spans. The piers are of hexagon shape and the body of the piers is hollowed with thin wall. The pier will be prefabricated as a whole in vertical type or prefabricated section by section. For a single piece, the maximum height reaches up to 26.95m and the maximum weight up to 3380 tons. In total, approximately 17000 tons of epoxy-coated reinforcement will be made and fixed and 88500 m³ of concrete will be placed.

Inspection for acceptance of the first prefabricated pier is being organized by CCCC-FHEC and preparation for prefabricating other piers is underway simultaneously. Pier prefabrication will be carried out in full scale very soon. (Zhao Li)
